These languages (Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese) benefit from front-loading study of the writing system, since characters or scripts significantly impact reading speed and vocabulary acquisition. Allocate your first 4-8 weeks primarily to writing fundamentals before emphasizing conversational patterns.

Once writing systems are manageable, prioritize listening comprehension and controlled speaking practice alongside grammar structures. At this difficulty tier, consistency matters more than intensity; spreading study across five or six days weekly typically yields better retention than concentrated weekend sessions. Set interim milestones around the 400, 800, and 1,400-hour marks, targeting basic conversation, sustained listening comprehension, and intermediate reading ability respectively.
